Adeoye Irelewuyi, who happens to be the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), while confirming this incident, revealed that the driver lost control of the bus due to excessive speeding. The FRSC boss sympathized with the families of the people that died on the bus as well as those that were inflicted with varying degrees of injuries. He urged motorists to pay attention to the road while driving and also adhere to the speed limit for safe driving.
Irelewuyi stated that the accident that happened on Tuesday 5th of October, 2021 at Okija along Ihiala-Onitsha Expressway, involved a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number XC 505 ATN and a Mercedes trailer with registration number XF 123 JJT. According to him, the bus is a property of Imo State Transport Company (RTC). There were nine people, including 5 males and 4 females in the bus at the time of the crash. 2 males were killed, while 6 people (3 males and 3 females) sustained injuries.
On getting to the scene of the accident, the Sector Commander revealed that the injured passengers were rushed to the Obijackson Foundation in Okija by FRSC and police personnel. Unfortunately, two of them gave up the ghost upon arrival and were confirmed by the doctor on duty. He also confirmed that a truck conductor lost his life on the same road after jumping off the vehicle. He attributed this similar incident to speeding where the conductor was smashed by the rear tyre of the tanker.
