1st compact premium Volvo SUV - the 2018 Volvo XC40 finally goes into production

The XC40 will be assembled in Volvo Cars plant - Ghent in Belgium.

According to the latest car news, the Volvo XC40 2018 is the first ever compact premium model in the SUV segment of the brand. The car's appeal is undeniable as there have been more than 13,000 orders for it. And the first batch of the XC40 is expected to meet their owners at the beginning of 2018.

The XC40 also marks the joining of Volvo Cars into the fastest growing segment of the auto industry. It also opens a new era for revenue growth and sales of the car manufacturer. The XC40 winds up the international SUV range of Volvo which has already included the bigger XC90 and  XC60.

The XC40’S arrival will be gladly received by a lot of Volvo Cars’ high-level delegates including Mr. Håkan Samuelsson - President and Chief Executive, Mr. Charles Michel - Belgian Prime Minister and Mr. Javier Varela - Senior Vice President Manufacturing and Logistics.

At the first day of XC40 production, Mr. Samuelsson expressed his happiness and high appreciation for all employees as they worked hard to prepare well for the first XC40 production. He also believed that the XC40 would bring Ghent and Volvo Cars a bright future.

The all-new Volvo XC40 2018 is the first model using the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform of Volvo Cars which will underpin all upcoming cars in the 40 series. With the CMA platform which is co-developed with Geely, Volvo will supply necessary concerted efforts and reduce the production cost for the luxury car segment.

Preparations for the XC40 production in Ghent have been done for a long time. In recent years, enormous investments have made the Ghent plant become a global export center for CMA-based vehicles, including an additional 8,000 m2 to the facility.

In total, there are 363 new robots have been installed, including one robot nicknamed "the Beast" buy the Ghent staffs. This big robot is unique in the global production system of Volvo Cars and is assembled in order to lift cars having lower bodies onto a conveyor belt near the factory’s ceiling.

Speaking of Ghent, it is one of two Volvo car factories in Europe. It has started producing Volvo cars since 1965. Ghent also made the best-selling mid-size SUV of Volvo - the XC60, the V40 Cross Country, V40, V60 and the S60 as well.

In 2016 fiscal year, Volvo Car Group earned 11,014 MSEK in operating profit while the 2015’s number was 6,620 MSEK. Revenues during this period totaled up to 180,672 MSEK (164,043 MSEK in 2015). The global sales in this year also achieved a record with 534,332 units, rising 6.2% compared to 2015. This helped Volvo Car Group continue investing in its plan of international transformation.
