1. Toyota Matrix – the only child of Toyota and General Motors
The Toyota Matrix, or often called the Toyota Corolla Matrix is the result of co-operation between Toyota and General Motors. NUMMI was the joint venture of two brands, which was responsible for manufacturing Matrix. The model was designed as a compact hatchback, adopting many styling features and mechanical engineering from Toyota Corolla.
Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe were actually the same model
Matrix was released in 2002 and sold in North America till its discontinuation. While the Toyota Matrix for sale hit a peak in sales, the Pontiac Vibe – the GM version did not gain that much popularity.
Despite following the same automotive technologies, Matrix and Vibe still remain distinctive in certain aspects. The differences lie in the sheet metal as well as exterior trim that marks the unique design of each original car brand. However, both products share similar station wagon body style plus emphasis of crossover utility vehicles called CUV fashion by Toyota.
In Nigeria, the Toyota Matrix is the most sought-after model in the hatchback/small wagon segment. With its high fuel economy, pliant ride, spacious cabin and great versatility, Toyota Matrix is pretty much everything you could expect from a family-oriented vehicle. 3. Toyota Matrix - Important notes
Going through 10 years of modifications, the Toyota Matrix cars are divided into 2 generations the former of which was produced from 2002 to 2008.
3.1 The first-gen Toyota Matrix
The first Matrix introduced was built on the Toyota Corolla platform as a 5-door hatchback. It was positioned in sports compact segment, using the front engine, available in both front wheel drive and all-wheel-drive layout.
The very first Matrix came out in 2002 as a 2003 model
It’s not until 2005 did the first model receive a facelift with styling revision: redesigned fascia, red lenses replacement and upgraded instrument panel.
Matrix came with 2 four-cylinder engine options, including 1ZZ-FE I4 derived from Corolla and 2ZZ-GE I4 from Toyota Celica GT-S. Either automatic or manual transmissions were offered then.
Four models had been introduced in the first gen: no-frills base model; Matrix XR mid-grade trim level; Matrix XRS extra-equipped with anti-lock brakes, electronic brakeforce distribution as well as cruise control, and M-Theory covered in exclusive “Speedway Blue.”
Matrix XRS was equipped with extra features
3.2 The second-gen Toyota Matrix
The second generation of Matrix was released for sale in 2008 as 2009 model. Pontiac Vibe was simultaneously upgraded but its production soon ended right after. Pontiac brand was also removed out of the automotive industry accordingly.
Back to Matrix, two engine configurations were offered: 2ZR-FE for the standard model and 2AZ-FE for S/ XRS trim grades.
Regarding its safety, all second-gen Matrix came with side torso airbags, side curtain airbags, ABS and EBD. Vehicle stability and traction control was made standard for 2010 models onwards. Matrix also scored high in IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA crash tests.
Toyota Matrix ranked “Good” in IIHS crash tests
3.3 Toyota Matrix recalls
In 2008, Toyota with GM announced a large-scaled recall for Matrix and Vibe model years 2003 to 2004. The problem was cited as front door bolts might cause windows to break, but this only applied to power window versions.
In 2010, Toyota had to recall Matrix, and also Corolla, model years 2005 to 2008 for fixing errors in ECM (engine control module).
Once again, two more recalls were published in 2011 and 2012 for other problems related to accelerator pedal and side power windows.
This carmaker had to issue at least 4 recalls for Matrix
4. What would we say at last?
Those mentioned recalls of Matrix were the solid evidence for the willingness to take responsibility and actions to fix problems, not the indicator of poor performance of Toyota vehicles. They have strived continuously to reflect on their own product though it has already become a big name in the market.
