Many see ones who own Mercedes as the wealthy but do you know making your Mercedes-Benz upgraded and high-end looking doesn't cost that much! Read on!

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is the one SUV that has been fully attributed to very wealthy individuals in Nigeria. Once you see a G-Wagon, funny how you just smell power and money on the owner whether they have either of them or not haha. The 'G' in the G-Class means 'Geländewagen' and is pronounced 'G-Wagen' in Germany.

Today, I want to show you how to go about upgrading a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon in Nigeria. Listen, there are a lot of hacks involved with the G-Wagon upgrade and I would share them all with you today so that you can also become a powerful and wealthy individual with just one boxy car.

Have you ever wondered why the G-Wagon is very common in Nigeria even though it is expensive? Well, the fact that this car had only one generation for 28 years subjects it to an almost infinite upgrade/facelift possibility. And you know what? Nigerians upgrade the G-Wagon every day!

Originally a defence/military vehicle like the Peugeot P4, the G-Wagon is a boxy design SUV by Mercedes-Benz that hasn't changed its exterior design language since it started in 1990 when the non-military W463 version was introduced for customers that just wanted the car. As boxy as this car looks, its Electronic Stability Program makes it one of the most stable SUVs in the world at high speed.

It was from 2018 that the G-wagon received a major redesign. This is me being sincere; this redesign is just a facelift that was done really well. The new generation G-Wagon still maintains that boxy look but now with curvy features like headlights and taillights.

The dimension of the car also changed meaning it is now sitting on a new chassis for the first time after 28 years.

What G-Wagon can you upgrade/facelift in Nigeria?

You can upgrade/facelift any G-Wagon from 1990 to 2017 to look like 2018, 2019, and 2020 G-Wagon. The major changes that the G-Wagon has seen throughout the 28 years are limited to just the interior, grilles, and lights. The G-Wagon was redesigned in 1997, 2002, 2006, 2009 and 2012. This groups the G-Wagon into the following year models.

  • 1990 - 1997
  • 1998 - 2002
  • 2003 - 2006
  • 2007 - 2009
  • 2010 - 2017
  • 2018 - present

The complete exterior facelift kit contains the following; front bumper, 4 quarter panels, headlight cover, grille. If you are upgrading to the 2019 and 2020 G-Wagon then it will come with headlights and taillights.

Interior evolution of the G-Class over the years

There are extra accessories that can make your G-Wagon look even more upgraded. A roof spoiler, front spoiler with led light bars and bumper add-on. You can also upgrade the Mercedes-Benz G-class interior. From the infotainment to the steering wheel and the gear knob. Older G-Wagons have no means of connecting with your smartphone but with an infotainment upgrade, your G-Wagon can become a music and movie studio.

These are stand-alone upgrade parts that can be purchased along with the facelift conversion kit.

There is another aspect of the G-Class vehicles upgrade you must know about. The popular G-Wagons in Nigeria would be the AMG variants with the G63 alphanumeric code. The normal G-Class is the 'G500' which is very rare because everyone wants that rumbling AMG exhaust and brutal acceleration.

The difference between the G500 and the G63 AMG is the exterior styling, interior styling, and performance. The G63 is more aerodynamic, having a sportier appearance than the regular G500. The interior is also branded AMG and also fitted with sporty stock wheels.

The AMG has the vertical grilles while the regular G-Class has the horizontal grilles

Most Nigerians want the G63 AMG over the regular G500. This is why the first facelift you can do to any G-Wagon is to make it appear like an AMG G-Class by changing the bumpers and wheels then slapping AMG emblems on the rear and at the fenders. This is actually badge theft because it deceives people that can't tell an AMG from the performance or exhaust sound.

Where to buy the G-Wagon upgrade kits in Nigeria

The G-Wagon upgrade is very popular in Nigeria which makes a market available for the upgrade parts. The upgrade parts vary from ₦800,000 to ₦2,000,000 depending on the year of the conversion kit and the number of items it comes with.

How to spot an upgraded/facelifted G-Wagon in Nigeria

With the rate at which the G-Wagon gets upgraded in Nigeria, it is very easy to fall for scams when buying a used G-Wagon in Nigeria. Imagine buying a supposedly 2016 AMG G-Wagon for ₦40,000,000 when it is actually a 2010 G500 just upgraded to 2016 G63 AMG.

This is an upgraded 2004 G-Wagon to 2014 (10 years apart wow)

To avoid this, just make sure you do the following:

  • Check for the chassis number and confirm the details of the car online
  • Check the engine for the signature of the AMG engine builder
  • Check for the AMG stitching/emblems on the interior of the car
  • If the Chassis number has been painted, run away because it is a scam

Once the car seller reveals that the car is upgraded/facelifted then just negotiate the selling price based on the actual year then add about ₦2,000,000 maximum to your bargaining price just for the sake of the upgrade/facelifting.
