Now it's time to renovate your ideas of the wheel and rim as many of you have been mistaking between the two for years. Let's jump right in to learn the difference and how you should choose tyre rims that fit your tyres.

Some people often misconstrue the terms “rim” and “wheel” to mean the same thing. In fact, although these two mobility parts of a car are closely related, they are quite two distinctive parts.

While the wheel refers to the entirety of the metallic part unto which the tyre is mounted, the rim is only but a part of the wheel.

This diagram below will give you a clearer picture of what a rim is when compared to the wheel.

The wheel comprises the rim, wheel disc, and hub

1. Difference between rims and wheel

The rim is simply the cylindrical outer edge of the wheel. Its main function is to support and seal the tyre unto the wheel to avoid loss of the air inside the tubeless tyre.

The wheel disc is part of the wheel that connects the rim and hub. Some wheel disc and hub are detachable from the wheel while others are not.

The component parts of the wheel comprise the rim, wheel disc and hub. The hub is the wheelbase that bears some studs via which the wheel is fixed to the suspension.

2. How to choose tyre rims that fit your tyres

When you are considering how to choose tyre rims that fit your tyres, there are two closely related sizes that you must consider – rim width and tyre width. Simply put, there is a rim width range suitable for every tyre size and on the other hand, there is a tyre width range suitable for every rim size.

There is a rim width range suitable for every tyre size and vice-versa

If you have a tyre of a particular size and your goal is to replace your rim with a wider or narrower one, the question you should ask is:

2.1 What rim widths will fit with my tyre width?

If for instance, your particular tyre size is 195/65/R15, the corresponding rim widths that can fit with your tyre size are 5.5, 6.0 and 7.0 inches.

On the other hand, if you have a rim of particular rim width and your goal is to replace your tyre with a wider or narrower one, the question you should ask is:

2.2 What tyre widths will fit with my rim width?

For a rim of 6.0 inches, the appropriate tyre widths are 175mm, 185mm, 195mm and 205mm. For a 6.0” rim, a tyre width of 175mm can be said to be the minimum corresponding tyre width, 185 and 195 are considered as the ideal tyre widths while 205 can be said to be the maximum corresponding tyre width.

2.3 Tyre widths for wheel/rim size chart

The tyre widths for wheel/rim size charts show what tyre width ranges are appropriate for a particular rim width. For example, the appropriate tyre width range for a rim width of 8.0” is 215mm, 225mm, 235mm or 245mm.

To check other matching tyre and rim widths, you can use the tyre size for rim size/width calculator or wheel/Rim Size Calculator.

You should note that mounting a tyre with width outside the minimum and maximum ranges is not recommended because the tyre tread will be either wider or narrower than the inside rim bead leading to an improper fitting scenario.
