The Peugeot 208 has been announced as the 2020 Car of the Year by the Geneva Motor Show jury. It beat other top automakers to grab the coveted award!

Emerging as Car of the Year is always the dream of every automaker especially when the recognition comes from a reputable organization in the automotive industry like the Geneva Motor Show. Every year, the best automakers go head-to-head in competition for the award, and only one lucky winner prevails. This year, Peugeot is the man of victory as the Peugeot 208 has been bestowed the 2020 Car of the Year.

The 2020 Car of the Year recognition was given to the 208 despite the cancellation of the 2020 Geneva Motor Show

Although the 2020 Geneva Motor Show was canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak, organizers of the show proceeded with the announcement due to its importance in the automotive industry.

The Peugeot 208’s victory was not a fluke.  Competing against heavyweights like the Ford Puma, BMW 1 Series, Porsche Taycan, Toyota Corolla, Renault Clio and Tesla Model 3, the 208 needed more than sheer luck to grab the crown. The exciting features of the car came all out to make a strong argument on why it should be the winner, and they were very convincing.

The win does not come as a surprise considering Peugeot’s track record in the event. Within a period of 10 years, the French auto brand has won the European Car of the Year three times. This is a big feat in a world where some automakers have not gotten close to the award. In 2014, the Peugeot 308 from the second generation grabbed the award. Its 3008 model was recognized as a sacred Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) in 2017.

A total number of sixty auto expert journalists were drawn from 23 countries to form the jury for the award. From the votes, the 208 received 281 points, closely followed by Tesla’s Model 3 with 242 points. The Porsche Taycan finished in third place with 222 points.
