On May 13, 2015, the Election Tribunal for Rivers State in Abuja commenced the hearing on the election of Wike.
One Dr Dakuku Peterside of the opposing APC party was asking the tribunal to nullify the election of Wike who was declared winner in the governorship poll for Rivers in 2015. Dakuku's call was based on the grounds that the election was won with malpractice and non-compliance with the Electoral Act. After Wike seemed to not be showing up in court for the hearing, the Rivers State governorship elections tribunal nullified the election of Wike on October 24, 2015. The tribunal ordered a rerun of the election in Rivers State within 90 days immediately after this judgement. After going back and forth on court matters, Wike assumed his governorship position and was re-elected in 2019.

In March 2021, Nyesom Wike accused the Federal Government of shielding the Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi from prosecution over misappropriation of funds from Rivers State assets. Wike said it was disingenuous for the Federal Government to commence a narrow gauge rail line from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri at a time the rest of the world was building a standard gauge railway.
Governor Wike said this during the commissioning of the 6.1km Omuihuechi-Omuoko-Omokiri link Road in Aluu, Ikwerre Council Area of the state. He said it was appalling that the Federal Government had continued to shield Amaechi from prosecution. He alleged that Amaechi needs to account for $308m gotten from the sale of Rives State-owned power plant and other critical assets when he was Governor.
