Everyone knows what a headlight or headlamp is. Do you know the different types of headlamps that exist though? Find out in this exciting article!

When it comes to shopping for a car, the car headlights might not be the first thing that comes to your mind. However, it is definitely something you need to pay attention to as it is vital for your safety. Your car headlight is the beam of light that ensures you don’t crash into anything or get into an accident on the road in the night, preventing road fatalities.

Different types of car headlights have been invented, developed, and evolved for different cars over time. It is good to familiarize yourself with the types of headlights and their bulbs. You might not know exactly when you would need to change the bulb in your car or what type of headlight to go for.

Car headlights are non-negotiable for night driving

Even if you don’t know the types of headlights well, you’re in the right place. This article is for you to avoid confusion when shopping for your car. Also, with the increasing innovation of these car headlights by automobile electrical engineers, this article provides you with the information you need on the different types of car headlights, their features, and functions.

4 Types of headlights 2020

On the basis of the level of brightness, headlights come in low beam or high beam types. The low beam is mostly focused ahead to provide adequate lighting without dazzling or blinding other drivers. It is mostly restricted to one side of the road while the high beam also called full-beam (or full light in Naija terms) gives a brighter center distributed, heavier amount of light to see the road more clearly.

However, it is without control and can be dangerous at the expense of the other incoming drivers around you.

Check out the car headlight types below:

1. Halogen headlights

Most vehicles are equipped with halogen Headlights. They are very popular and have been used for decades. Typically, halogen headlights contain a bright white filament bulb with a little yellow coloration. It surrounds a projector beam that makes the vehicle headlight look like eyes. It is very stylish with an appealing sporty outlook. It comes in H3, HB3, H7, and H9 bulbs, although aside these, there have been several advances in halogen technology.

Halogen lights are very popular and easy to replace

A little technical stuff: The halogen headlight is a combination of gases contained in a sealed unit that generates heat and produces a good level of illumination. The gases make the bulbs hotter and therefore brighter. An average standard halogen bulb would last about 800 hours and produce 1300 lumen.

One of the strong points of the halogen bulb is that it charges up in a short while. It is universal and so, very easy to replace. It offers sufficient lighting for safe driving on the road and highways.

However, it is prone to excess heat and its filament bulb burns out and sometimes breaks.

As the most widely used car headlight that has been developed, the halogen headlight is commonly used as parking light, taillights, reverse lights, turn signals, and others.

2. Hid Xenon headlights

The High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights, also known as XENON headlight is an advancement in car headlight technology. It was created shortly after the halogen bulbs were created. It has distinctive features such as the cool radiance of its bright white/blue light bulb. The light is quite similar to daytime light, making the road quite lit up and brighter. The HID lights have been specially designed for the human eye so that drivers can become more relaxed, and able to see clearly without fatigue or tiredness.

Xenon lights light up the road ahead at night

HID projector headlights make use of XENON gas through a gaseous discharge process by heated gases and rare metals. These generate the bright blue or white glow and are also for the start-up process. The lights project a stronger glare than the traditional halogen light although it could be a disturbance to the rear-view mirror ahead of you and for oncoming drivers.

The first debut of HID headlight was on the 1991 BMW 7 Series, in their flagship sedan. Although considered high-end and more expensive than the halogen bulbs, more manufacturers use it now and it is still quite affordable.

Interestingly, the headlight can last up to 2000 hours. They are three times brighter than the halogen bulbs although they have the same watts. With this light, you can detect the dangers and obstacles on the road in time, including cars, cyclists, pedestrians, and other road users. If you often drive on roads that are dimly lit at night then, this would be the best option for you because HID lights are the brightest.

3. LED headlights

In this modern century, faster and more attractive cars with LED (Light Emitting Diodes) headlights are coming up and they come in cooler styles. People love these latest cars with LEDs because they are a great improvement in the automobile industry. The LED lights are cost-effective, more efficient, and increasingly popular. They are also highly reliable and come in a variety of designs.

LED headlight, shine the light on that road!

Now, you no longer have to worry about being able to see and be seen at nighttime even in the rain, storms, or fog when you will need foglights. It can be difficult to know how to distinguish foglights from daytime running lights. With these great headlights, you can be assured of safety from the road and traffic hazards, and it does not give as much glare as the HID lights.

Classy and cool, LEDs are nothing short of 'amazing!'

With the LEDs' added style, more concentrated uniform appearance and functionality, they come in other shapes besides the bulb and have a long service life. Car models such as the 2018 KIA Soul features LED lighting. LEDs turn on over 250 times faster and are more expensive than the halogen bulbs. But they are still very affordable for automotive use.

LED lighting is mostly used because it is maintenance-free, very safe for the environment and it is a highly recommended light source for headlights, tail lamps including brake and indicator lights. The light is small and it emits smaller amounts of heat and there’s a lot more flexibility with its design, which is why most manufacturers prefer LED headlight. It is used by several automakers such as BMW, Hyundai, Audi, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz and many more.

4. Laser headlights

When you hear LASER, the picture of two red lights shooting from the eyes of the cartoon character ‘Superman’ might come to mind but, that’s not what we are talking about right now. Laser headlights are insanely cool headlights you can get on your automobile. Although it is still in its prototype phase and currently not allowed in the U.S, it is already in use in Europe. They are the brand new technology currently in the market and the automobile industry.

Laser headlights, simply breathtaking!

It has been the talked about futuristic car headlights model, the next huge leap in the headlight industry. It comes in different shapes and designs, even more flexible than the LED.

In this headlight, a laser is used instead of electricity and laser lamps use half as much power as the LED lamps. It has a high beam range of over 600 meters and provides illumination for high-speed driving even in dim-light conditions. It is the latest innovation and it is very versatile. It offers a far coverage range and optimal brightness than HID and LED units. Although it is expensive and runs hotter than other headlights, it still causes excitement as both Audi and BMW use it on their select models and it is greatly anticipated to be in popular demand soon worldwide.
