There is a big difference between the wheel and the tire. Tires of course are the rubber parts that acually meet the road. Heard the saying "when the rubber meets the road?" Wheels are the metal parts that bolt to the vehicle’s hub, often via the axle.

Wheels are typically frabicated out of steel, and also they can be made from some sort of metallic alloy. Others also can be made from carbon fiber. Due to their non-contact with the road surface, they are not wear and tear items, and might not need replacement from time to time, except there’s damage or some strong desire to change them to a more fashionable one.

2. Components of the wheel

  • Outboard face

This includes the style of the wheel and its structure.

  • Centre bore

The hole at the middle of the wheel; this is covered by the manufacturer’s logo.

  • Spokes

This links the plate and the edge of the rim. It comes in various count, diameters, lengths and shapes. It’s crucial to the weight and strength of the wheel.

  • Rim

It is the skeletal body of the tire. It serves as a framework around which the actual tire hangs, apart from this, it is also housing for the hub. Uusually a rim is galvanized using metals like steel, other alloys, and also aluminum. This is crucial in the size of the wheel. It’s the outer diameter of the wheel. Rims used in cars are of different shapes and they also are made accordin to sizes.

It’s either made as standard rims, with plastic hubcaps cover, and rims that spin that may have some designs attached that spin also. You can also get custom wheel rims which provide aftermarket coloring, style, and size options.

Six major components of a car wheel

  • Tire

The wheel’s outer covering is called the tire. To mount a tire on a wheel, the two components need to be compatible in size. They come in different sizes and shapes that depend on the type of car to which you attach them. Tires are filled with pressurized air to provide the cushion support. You need to fill it to a certain number of pounds per square inch (psi) which depends solely, on the surface of the road, type of car and type of rubber that is used in the tire. Manufacturers list the specifications on the wall of the tire.

  • The hub

The hub is the central part of the wheel that attaches the entire wheel to the axle and the braking system. The middle hole in the hub is what functions as the axle's port. The axle connects two wheels as a shaft in the middle of the circle of bolts. Other things such as brake rotors are pressed close to the wheel hub with the hub assembliy; when you brake the vehicle, that action happens in the wheel, making the car halt either gradually or all at once.

3. Materials used in making the wheel

The production material affects its durability, look, performance, strength and weight. They include the following:

  • Steel (simple and cheap, but heavier than others).
  • Aluminum alloy (almost all car producers use this for balancing strength and weight). It’s cost-effective and durable also.
  • Carbon Fiber (perfect for track-oriented sports car).  Its disadvantage is the price, and the single impact curb.
