History of women in automobiles

Formerly, in the past women depended on a male figure to take them from point A to point B, as driving was seen as an activity which was designed for and also enjoyed by men alone. Of course, a lot has changed now.

These days, Nigerian women as well as women all over the world drive some of the best cars in the automobile market. This wasn't always so, as women in many areas of the world were once banned from driving cars in public areas. The recent unbanning of women from driving in some countries makes this a much more inclusive global activity.

Up until the year 2018, it would surprise you to know that Saudi Arabian women were actually banned from driving any sort of vehicle. This didn't sit well with these women though, as campaigns were held by these female activists with the aim of opposing the government in power and coercing a change in the law which gave the men of Saudi Arabia more rights than them in this regard.

The Nigerian born Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti became the first Nigerian woman to drive a car only after extensive advocacy of women's rights. This came about by demanding better representation of women in local governing bodies. This goes to show how far women have gone and what they have had to overcome in order to break the inequality barrier pertaining to the rights to own, drive, and also manage an automobile.

What is the importance of a car to women today?

Before we get to answering the principal question at hand, we first need to look at things from the perspective of a woman, especially a career woman. A woman with a job that requires her to go to and fro, from her home to her place of work. In order to save on the costs of everyday transportation using a taxi in Nigeria, it makes great sense to own and use one’s personal commute car for the required daily commute.

Therefore, choosing the ideal or perfect car should be of paramount importance to the prospective buyer. In choosing this ideal car, especially for a first-time car owner or beginner driver who intends to also make use of this aforementioned vehicle for work-related purposes, a question needs to be answered:

What is a Nigerian professional woman looking for in a car?

In a male-dominated business world in Nigeria, nothing creates a better first impression than the dress a woman wears and the car she rides. There are different criteria a woman must be focused on before deciding on her ideal career vehicle:

  • Car size

  • Car prestige

  • Car versatility

  • Car price

  • Car style

Car size: since Nigerian roads are very rough, going for a small to medium-sized female-friendly Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) or Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) with enough room, will certainly add positively to the daily hustle of a professional woman in Nigeria.

Car prestige: As a career woman, an accomplished, reputable, or sophisticated vehicle surrounds you with an aura of success which gives you such confidence that puts your environment in no doubt.

Car versatility: Some versatile vehicles have loads of cargo space, while others are super fuel-efficient, enabling the sort of freedom that comes with bypassing the gas station more often than not.

Car affordability: Depending on cash buoyancy, cheaper fuel economy cars with low maintenance and high fuel economy ratings are recommended.

Car style: Women are of course more fashion-conscious than men. While for men, issues of color and finishing in a car may be secondary, for a woman, they often come even before car performance. Both exterior and interior style really contribute a lot to a woman’s ultimate choice.

1. Mercedes Benz ML 4Matic

2. The Honda CR-V

It is one of the most sought-after vehicles in Nigeria, and it also gets much love from women as it is easy to drive with lots of room for its size and has good mileage too.

The latest ones show an improvement on the earlier models of Honda CR-V in terms of interior, cargo space, ride quality and standard-equipment list. All of these keep it atop women car shoppers’ list.

4. Audi Q7

The Audi Q7 utilizes a modified version of the Volkswagen Group PL71 platform. Previewed by the Audi Pikes Peak Quattro concept car, the Q7 is designed more for on-road use and was not meant for serious off-road use. It is a spacious car for both family use and more business-related purposes as it is spacious both in front and in the rear.

Big changes came under the bonnet, where Audi is offering a 3.0L TFSI supercharged V6 (with start-stop technology) lifted from the Audi S4, so the smooth engine performance is lovable.

5. Range Rover Sport

Women love Range Rover Sport for these reasons – they are expensive off-road capable vehicles designed to induce swoon, which is why men also aspire to own them. It’s voted “most desirable SUV” in women’s car of the year competition in 2014. Agility isn’t normally a word used when the subject is a 2.5-ton luxury SUV—but the Range Rover Sport blends enthusiasm with legendary off-road prowess.

This is a car that will definitely draw the crowd to you and command the respect of colleagues at your workplace. It is safe to say it is really one of the best luxury cars around today.
