We have decided to take a look at two heavy weight compact crossovers – 2019 Mazda CX-5 and 2019 Toyota RAV4, and see which one suits your needs and taste more here on Naijauto.

1. Mazda CX-5 2019 vs Toyota RAV4 2019 Price

One of the best-selling models ranging from different auto brands is compact hatchback SUV-like vehicles. The Toyota RAV4 has a pedigree for being the Toyota best-selling car in the entire class and also comes fourth in the US automotive market. Although the sales of CX-5 didn’t come close to that of RAV4 but it edges the entire combined line-up of Mazda in terms of sales in 2018. In their different fields, they are two crossovers ruling their domain.

The two 2019 compact crossover SUVs are holding best-selling model in their respectful domain

It is absolutely normal that cars of this pedigree would mostly be affordable by the rich people in the society.

For Mazda CX-5, you could spend as little as $25,395 (~N9.1 million) and as much as $40,000 (~N14.4 million) depending on the trim level you are hunting for. You would have to pay more if you are after all-wheel-drive with an additional $1,400 (~N504,300) especially on trims that are lower. This drive system is standard on Signature models and higher Grand Touring Reserve.

This is similar with Toyota RAV4. The base price comes at $26,595 (~N9.6 million) and could go up to $40,000 (~N14.4 million) for the fully loaded version. Just like in CX-5, you would add $1,400 to get the rear-wheel powered up.

The non-optional Signature version comes with a standard all-wheel-drive in this 2019 Mazda CX-5. It also comes with new G-Vectoring control plus by Mazda, keyless start and entry, heated and ventilated front seats and heated rear, nappa leather, sunroof, adaptive cruise control, climate control, navigation, active safety equipment (complimentary) and 360-degree camera. For its engine department, it comes with an upgraded CX-5 engine of 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 with the output of 250hp and 310 pound feet of torque. This is a standard feature on Signature and Grand Touring Reserve versions. For the lesser trim, you would be offered 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine with an output of 186 horsepower. Mazda also offers an optional 2.2-liter turbocharged diesel four engine. Well, the point is, if you are going for other brands, you would spend as much to get their full loaded versions.

Just like Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV4 gives impressive engine performance

For the $39,084 worth of Limited model in RAV4, it gets the all-wheel-drive and a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with an output of 203 horsepower and 184 pound feet of torque. We can say this engine is somehow behind Mazda but when you get the 8-speed automatic, it takes up the output of the engine. For potential buyers with doubt, it is worthy of note that Toyota RAV4 shares similar line by line content with the features in the luxury CX-5. It offers foot activation for rear power hatch and wireless phone charging. While Mazda is very much compatible with Android Auto, Toyota promises Apple CarPlay.

2. Mazda CX-5 2019 vs Toyota RAV4 2019 Driving experience

Well, we believe premium standard for compact crossovers is the Mazda CX-5. It is a standout car as far as road performance is concerned. This obviously comes to mind the moment you sit behind the wheel and takes it right onto road. Its look is impressive and a precise rock-solid steering perfect for straight-line driving. When you attempt to turn the wheel, you get an exciting and satisfying effort in its build up. The body control in this 2019 CX-5 is created in such a way that it delivers a remarkable comfort while driving regardless of the situation.

2019 Toyota RAV4 vs Mazda CX-5

For the 2019 Toyota RAV4, its steering is connected and communicative as well, with a lot consideration for a well-balanced and firmly planted crossover compact. The stability control goes into play in keeping things controlled and neutral around corners before you even get any big interruption or warning light.

Most car lovers would prefer the brake pedal in RAV4 to the CX-5. The Mazda’s brake pedal feels slightly squishy when at the peak of travelling but RAV4 takes the pedestrian products into its consideration. The feel, handling and braking number in RAV4 is the best in its segment. Despite Mazda subjective composure and comfort, its 0.78g and 175-foot shifts towards the back.

The cabin design in the 2019 RAV4 is well detailed and decently styled for effective and exciting driving

The burliest engine in the class is the boosted four (optional) in Mazda. It makes the CX-5 the quickest by a large margin despite that it doesn’t really sound very well or rev very high. The 3.5 turbo in Mazda lacks in term of fuel efficiency as compared to the other model. It offers EPA estimates of 22mpg for city drive, 27 mpg for drive on the highway and a combined 24 mpg for both city and highway. The 6-speed is experimentally very satisfying, quick and really smooth.

Mazda edges Toyota in engine behaviour as 2.5 RAV4 is loud and gritty. Its 8-speed automatic feels abrupt and slow while in action. But Toyota definitely see the better of Mazda in the area of fuel economy, with an EPA estimate of 25mpg for drive within city, 33 mpg for highway and 28mpg for combined city/highway. So, RAV4 takes an average of 32 mpg to the 30 mpg in CX-5.

3. Mazda CX-5 2019 vs Toyota RAV4 2019 Interior space

Toyota really took their time in making this RAV4 interior very distinctive. With nicely rendered lines and a little polarizing end result. There is a huge area in the front and rear seating. It offers a comfortable reclining cushy seat. When you a look behind the rear seat, you would see one of the biggest cargo storage area up to 37 cubic feet especially for a car of its class. The downside is that the environment could get noisy at times especially from the tire and wind noise. RAV4 feels lighter than most rival models. So, we feel Toyota can pack some sound deafening features without going overboard.

If you are looking for spacious compact crossover, 2019 Toyota RAV4 is the answer

Though looks narrow and not as spacious as RAV4 but its design is better styled and more refined

CX-5’s interior is rather upscale and luxurious. It is made of lovely and stylish material with flare for tasteful and refined cabin design. It has a loud climate control system especially with the ventilated seat. Although the cabin feels somehow narrow but there is a commendable support for front seats. It offers USB ports on the arm rest at the rear and the presence of seat-heater controls (outboard). You might not be able to charge your phone if you sit at the middle but seat heat setting would make up for it. It also comes with a well spacious cargo area of 31 cubic meters.

4. Mazda CX-5 2019 vs Toyota RAV4 2019 Verdict

If you are looking for a very spacious, comfortable and engaging crossover compact, looks like Toyota RAV4 2019 is your answer. So, RAV4 is moving towards Camry direction of exciting driving experience. It is a very reliable car and we expect Toyota to work on its powertrain sound.

Mazda, on the other hand, is an exemplary crossover compact while Toyota RAV4 dwells on competence. Not as spacious as Toyota but offers greatly when it comes to road performance. Mazda CX-5 2019 has a full-blown luxury feel and moves in a very appealing way.
